Redeemer Radio

I know, I know. You can't actually SEE me on the radio. That's the delicious irony of the phrase, long used by a dear friend & Elkhart radio celebrity, Allen Strike when he was on WTRC 1340 AM. The phrase is ironic, but endearing and it always make me smile, so of course, I stole it and now use it all the time. (Sorry, not sorry, Allen!)

This morning, I spent some time with my good friends at Redeemer Radio as a guest host while Deacon Jim Tighe was on vacation. Andrea Serrani and Kyle Heimann are pretty incredible people and it was an honor to be able to spend my morning there. Also, full disclosure-- it was a TON of fun as well. I always enjoy my time coming in each week and having an on-air conversation about the weekly edition of the Today's Catholic newspaper. But today was different because I had to pay attention to the countdowns, intros and breaks of each segment. Being on the other side of the table gave me a greater appreciation for all the work that goes into the morning show every day. We are really lucky to have such talented people in our diocese.

The first segment got the morning started

right at 6 a.m. and I think that anyone who knows me well is still surprised that I was alert and functioning at that hour. We spent quite a bit of time talking about communications in our larger society and how things keep rapidly changing. But change is inevitable and an opportunity to spread the love of Jesus to those around us. It's also a chance to help tell a story that hopefully will inspire people to get involved and evangelize. And, as per my previous radio traditions, I got a new nickname...

I have to admit--I love talking with Dr. Matthew Bunson, so to do this interview was really exciting. In fact, for the first few minutes of the interview, it's actually just Andrea, Kyle and myself gushing about how awesome he is. During the interview, we learned about St. Bede, who is an extremely interesting saint and a great example of just how every single person be a light in a dark world. Dr. Matthew also shared the translation of my new nickname in Latin...off the top of this head...because he is brilliant. I hope to interview him again soon.

The final segment was my regular update from Today's Catholic and it was all about deacons! It's a great time in the diocese with two newly ordained deacons and three deacons who will be ordained to the priesthood on June 4th. Listen to the segment, check it out online and while you're on the internet, check out the new Facebook page for Bishop Rhoades!

Catholic radio is alive and well here in our diocese--and I love being a part of it on a weekly basis. So, until next week, see you on the radio!

Yup, I wrote that!

Thanks for reading my blog post. Writing brings me joy and I love when I can creatively express even the most simple events.

What else should I write about? I'm sure that you have great ideas. Or at least ones that I could write a stand-up comedy piece about.
